NEOnet - Filling the Technology Gaps in the North
NEOnet is Northeastern Ontario's not-for-profit information and communication technology (ICT) development organization, established in 1999. Its mandate is comprised of three themes.
The first theme is to: facilitate private and public sector partnerships that will result in better telecommunications infrastructure and ICT-related services in the region. Over the past year, NEOnet has formed or maintained over 150 partnerships for various projects and events, and continues to aggregate demand in order to maximize effectiveness and efficiency.
The second theme relates to: increasing awareness and adoption of information technology, thereby increasing demand for services and fostering a more competitive ICT environment. With events such as Tech Break Time, computer basics workshops and various publications, NEOnet and its partners demonstrate what is possible with ICT and generates interest among potential users.
The third theme consists of: promoting the development and innovative application of technology, especially as it pertains to the economic, cultural and social development of Northeastern Ontario. Projects like Resourcentral, Cellular Enhancement and Virtual Town Square are ICT applications that help develop the region.
NEOnet's Board of Directors is comprised of representatives from various communities in North Eastern Ontario. Both public and private sector organizations are represented to help NEOnet carry out its mandate within a regional context.
