The Establishment of Community Based Networks
In 1998, the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) announced a $16 million grant to establish five Community Based Networks (CBN’s) in Northern Ontario. These included:
- Cochrane and Temiskaming Districts: NEOnet
- Algoma District: ADnet
- Northwestern Ontario: 807 Network
- Sudbury District: Net Central
- Nipissing District: NipNet
All of these organizations have a mandate to bring improved telecommunications infrastructure to residents of Northern Ontario, by stimulating additional infrastructure investment in the public and private sector, encouraging competition among carriers and service providers, and by increasing the level of technology adoption and application among businesses, organizations and individuals.
