Enterprise Olympics Encourage Young Entrepreneurs

We believe that innovation is the driving force behind economic growth and prosperity in Northeastern Ontario. We were one of the proud sponsors of the fourth annual Enterprise Olympics hosted by Head Start in Business at Northern College May 4-5, 2016.

The Enterprise Olympics, in its fourth year, recognizes the importance of motivating and inspiring an entrepreneurial spirit in regional youth. The event attracted youth from across the region to Northern College to compete for a chance to win $1000 in post-secondary bursaries as well as bragging rights.

Students were able to choose from the following business sectors: Health and Wellness, Retail (Sales and Services), Technology and Innovation, Arts and Culture, Social Enterprise, Mining, Forestry and Agriculture

Event attendees were then split into teams according to sector and paired with mentors and worked on

  • Creating a business idea
  • Creating a detailed and researched business plan
  • Presenting a business pitch based on their idea

Each group had the chance to pitch their idea to a panel of sector specific judges, and the winner of each sector presented at the final ceremony. Our Director of Operations, Paul Ouimette, was on the technology and innovation panel where 36 youth formed 9 teams to describe their ideas.

Pitches were judged based on a series of metrics that included the business concept, presentation delivery, and creativity.

We believe that by supporting opportunities for youth entrepreneurship we are supporting the future.

The Northern Ontario Youth Entrepreneurship Initiative (Head Start in Business) is a group of twenty-four (24) Community Futures Development Corporations (CFDC’s) across Northern Ontario with a mandate to introduce entrepreneurship to youth.
