Our Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Project

Our Geographical Information Systems (GIS) project is a regional project that is intended to stimulate the economy in Northeastern Ontario. We have partnered with 22 municipalities in our catchment area to deliver this exciting project. It will have many benefits for all of the communities involved because it will create an organized repository of information and allow information queries to be completed quickly and efficiently.

Current project partners are digitizing their files and mapping their infrastructure, including:

  • Water and sewer
  • Cemetery layouts
  • 9-1-1 dispatch
  • Lot size and land parcels
  • By-law management

Here are some of the benefits that GIS can offer:

Risk Management Strategy: Creating a central filing system for information will ensure the continuity of information sharing. As employees age and prepare for retirement, a succession plan is needed to ensure that the information in their files and memories is properly stored.

Human Resources:  It will be easier to attract new staff to the community if the information is organized, accessible, and accurate.  Consequently development and investment can be effectively assessed and decisions made quickly and efficiently based on access to good data in a timely manner.

Trade Area Analysis: A trade area is the farthest distance that consumers are willing to travel for goods and services. A retail trade area depends on the variety of goods and services offered within the area and its proximity to other competing markets. Using GIS, partners will be able to incorporate drive time, customer locations and physical and cultural barriers into trade area models. GIS will assist in site selection for retail, commercial and industrial ventures by analyzing location appropriateness.

Strategic Planning: Using GIS partners will instantly access information that spans across all departments that will allow them to secure a better understanding of the community they serve.  This access to integrated information combined with the query ability of GIS technology enables the partners to conduct detailed analysis that otherwise would be extremely difficult and/or time consuming to conduct without this technology.

Business Retention & Expansion: The GIS tool can provide 24-7 access to data to assist business owners in determining if a community possesses valued amenities for its employees and other supportive/complementary businesses.  Such amenities may include educational facilities, medical facilities, police stations, fire stations, arenas, theatres, etc. GIS fosters the expansion of existing businesses and the attraction of new businesses, which means and increased tax base and revenue for the communities.
