Over the past decade NEOnet and it’s public and private sector project partners have dramatically improved access to high-speed Internet across North Eastern Ontario. An additional 40 communities have gained access to high-speed Internet and 817 small businesses have gained access to satellite Internet. NEOnet does however recognize that there is still work to do. Over 2000 homes remain without access to a reliable high-speed Internet connection and around 5000 homes remain without access to a minimum connection of 1.5 Mbps.
NEOnet is working diligently with numerous government agencies and telecommunication companies to bring service to the remaining unserved and under served homes. As telecommunication technology continues to advance non-traditional means for accessing high-speed Internet will continue to develop. The Gap Filler initiative will utilize all available technology to ensure the best solutions are put forward.
Currently an unserved or underserved area is not having access to a minimum download speed of 1.5 Mbps. With the recent CRTC announcement this will change to 5 Mbps by 2015. As NEOnet works to fill in the remaining service gaps the organization will ensure that a minimum of 5 Mbps is implemented.
