On March 16, 2000, the Ontario government provided a total of $16 million through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) to establish five regional telecommunications networks in Northern Ontario.

Community-Based Networks...

These new Community-Based Networks (CBNs) were to implement a state-of-the-art broadband telecommunications network that would ultimately service more than 200 communities in the North. Establishing a high technology environment through the CBNs initiative will further advance the North to a knowledge-based economy and will open the region to new economic development opportunities. The CBNs are based in Timmins, Sault Ste. Marie, Thunder Bay, Sudbury, Huntsville and North Bay.
