BTIF (Business Technology Improvement Fund)

The Business Technology Improvement Fund is designed for businesses located in the NEOnet service area (North Eastern Ontario). The objective of the program is to improve and implement technology into Northern Ontario businesses by purchasing digital technology components, new products, enterprise resource planning, specialized design, production equipment, CRM systems, hardware/software and education.

NEOnet will cover up to 50% of the funding up to a max of $25,000 (max $5,000 for websites, digital marketing, CMS) for digital technology adoption with non-repayable funding.

Applicants must have been in operation for at least 1 year on a full-time basis, have a business number, Canada Revenue Agency Notice of Assessment and gross a minimum of $35,000/yr. Established seasonal businesses are eligible. Hobby and Part-Time businesses are not eligible at this time. Businesses include: Tourism & Resources, Digital, Clean Technology, Health/Bio Sciences, Agri-Food, Advanced Manufacturing.

This program was developed to support innovation, grow companies and build stronger communities in Northern Ontario. 

Potential projects must align with program’s objectives such as:

  • New or updated website design Content Management

  • CMS integration SEO optimization

  • Digital marketing planning E-Business Sales

  • Customer software development Back office improvements

Eligibility

The following conditions must be met by SMEs to qualify for BTIF;

  • Established, full-time, for profit businesses (registered sole proprietor, partnership or corporation)

  • Established seasonal businesses, such as tourism operations, are considered eligible.

  • Businesses must be in operation for one-year.

  • Eligible SMEs targeted under the program would include those that fall under, but are not limited to, the following industry sector categories; Advanced Manufacturing, Agri-Food, Health/Bio-Science, Clean Technology, Digital, Tourism and Natural Resources

  • Businesses must be located in the NEOnet catchment area.

  • Hobby, part-time businesses, not-for-profits and municipalities are not eligible.

  • The following conditions may apply to a business that has previously received funding from the BTIF: 

    • There has been a three-year period since the original BTIF-funded project was completed

    • Funding availability

    • Depending on the funds available from the completed BTIF project, the proposed project may qualify for up to $25,000. Ex: Project #1 totalled $15,000, applicant would possibly access to $10,000, depending on eligibility.

Terms and Conditions

  • The SME must meet with NEOnet to confirm eligibility, register as a client and receive guidance regarding technology consultants and project plan.  

  • Eligible applicants may receive a reimbursement of up to 50%, up to a maximum of $25,000. Approved applicants will be required to contribute 50% toward project costs. 

  • Applicants will select a vendor; a list of possible vendors providing technology solutions (click here), NEOnet can provide assistance with the selection if requested. Work undertaken prior to the date the application is received is not eligible for the program.

  • Must have a minimum of two (2) quotes from Northeastern Ontario vendors. Applicants are not required to go with the lowest quote or with one of the northeastern Ontario vendors, but they must at least consider regional businesses before making their decision. Quotes over a year old will be deemed ineligible.

  • The approved SME are required to attend two (2) educational workshops to improve their understanding of related technologies.  Workshops will be communicated to all approved SME via e-mail and can be found on the NEOnet website – https://neonet.on.ca/events or by calling 705-360-1353.

  • Applicants are required to complete an online exit survey upon the completion of the project. In addition, a 1-year and 2-year follow-up questionnaire will be requested. This questionnaire will ask for information about the SME operations including metrics on achieved goals, objectives and changes since exiting the program.

  • Applicants must submit all appendixes, final invoices, proof of payment, EFT form with void cheque for repayment. Cash transactions are not eligible for subsidy.

  • Once NEOnet has received all requisite documents, reviewed the final report, and the applicant has satisfied all other program requirements, we will issue reimbursement.

  • Please note that the following costs are not eligible for BTIF funding:

    • Graphic design (ie, logos, artwork), photography, ongoing social media management and online advertising costs are not eligible costs.

    • Site maintenance and hosting fees ongoing costs are not eligible.

    • Consumables, inventory and administration costs

    • Work undertaken prior to project approval is not eligible for funding.

  • The program is conditional on the availability of funding.
